EDI Document Type - 824 Application Advice

What is an 824 Application Advice?

One of the most common EDI document types is the EDI 824 Application Advice.  The 824 document type is an electronic version of a paper Application Advice.  Standard EDI formats include X12, ANSI, EDIFACT and its subsets. Click here to read more about supported EDI Standards.

The 824 EDI document type is used to report the results of an application system's data content edits of transaction sets, which can then be reported at the functional group and transaction set levels, either in coded or free-form format.

What makes up the 824 Application Advice document?

An 824 EDI Application Advice is organized into the following segment and data elements.  A segment can contain at least one data element.  Each data element contains a data field. Data elements could include the transaction being responded to or the status of the application and decision on the application, identical to a paper application advice document. There are an infinite number of possibilities available for a company to include data on an 824 Application Advice.

How is it used?

The 824 EDI is designed to accomodate business needs of reporting the acceptance, rejection, or acceptance with change of a given transaction set. It should not be used in place of a document designed as a response to another document, such as an 855 in response to an 850. After the 824 Application Advice is received, a 997 Functional Acknowledgment is sent back from the receiver indicating that the 824 Application Advice was successfully received.

The Process and Standards

An EDI solution is required to process the EDI documents received into a financial system (click here to view all available financial systems eBridge integrates into) or into a readable format for manual entry.  Each trading partner will have an EDI Implementation guide outlining the specific segments, data elements, values accepted, and the applicable business rules to be followed.
